OWTY has learned the ’97 usynt Zach Kobayashi will be heading back Europe in October.
Kobayashi spent time last year with German club Werder Bremen who were keen to sign the midfielder from Southern California. Kobayashi was unable to obtain his EU passport so he then left Werder for Swiss club FC Basel, who too wanted to keep the young American on the books, but again his passport status got in the way.
His European trip did open the eyes of US scouts who invited him into a winter training camp to join a select squad of ’97s and ’98s.
Kobayashi returned to the California at the end of 2013 where he has been playing with his former club, West Coast FC.
Kobayashi will once again return to Germany this October rejoining the Werder Bremen side he left last season. Werder is intent on keeping close eyes on him. Likewise, Zach will travel back to FC Basel who rate him high following his stint with the club.
“I plan on staying with one of the clubs until I get my FIFA clearance. I loved my time at Werder, and Basel had a handful of 97’s with the first team for pre-season and the start of the season, and one of them just played against Real Madrid. Basel also plays in the UEFA Youth Champion’s League which is pretty sick.”
